Distruption of water supply

Interruptions to Water Supply in your area

Posted April 30th, 2013

The Dublin Region Watermains Rehabilitation Project is the largest project of its kind ever attempted in Ireland. Seven local authorities in the Dublin region together with the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government have committed to conserving water and creating an effective water network and replacing the Region’s ageing water mains.

The following administrative areas are included in the Project:

Dublin City Council
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council
Fingal County Council
South Dublin County Council
Bray Town Council
Kildare County Council (North County)
Wicklow County Council (North East County)

It is estimated that up to 800 km of water mains are over 80 years old and many of the existing water mains are cast iron. As a result of their age and increased workload due to increased demand for water, many of these old water mains are leaking or corroded, resulting in millions of litres of high quality drinking water being lost every day.

The Dublin Region Watermains Rehabilitation Project has been established to assist in reducing leakage by identifying and replacing the old water mains that have outlived their usefulness, with modern, new, heavy duty polyethylene pipes.

Since the project started in 2007, 140km of water mains have been replaced in the Dublin Region and 12 million litres of water has been saved everyday through a combination of water mains rehabilitation, pressure management and sub-metering of large areas.

Works have already been undertaken in the Dublin City area in the following locations; MerrionRoad, Morehampton Road, Mespil Road, Irishtown and Crumlin areas. In May 2013, the project will start work in the Gardiner Street, Camden Street Upper, Clanwilliam Place, North Strand, Terenure Road North, Christchurch Place and Crumlin Cross areas.
