Lack of primary school places for September 2014

Posted March 11th, 2014

Parents in Dublin Bay South will be aware that there is a lack of spaces in primary schools generally. Hence the move by this government to expedite school building programmes (eg. St. Mary’s, Belmont Avenue), and to establish new schools (eg. the new Educate Together for Dublin 2/4) in the community.

However there is a particular problem in relation to admission to schools in September 2014. This problem stands separately to the school admissions process, which is currently undergoing reform (more information on these reforms can be found here). Put simply, there has been an unexpected increase in demand for primary school places in September 2014.

I have been dealing with a number of parents and schools in relation to this issue and today in Dail Eireann I raised the matter with the Minister for Education, Ruairi Quinn. He explained the problem in detail and also stated that emergency measures were being put in place and that he is in contact with the relevant schools.
