Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government Phil Hogan TD has announced that he has approved the necessary funding to allow Dublin City Council to go ahead with Contract no. 6 and Contract no. 12 of the Dublin Region Watermains Rehabilitation Project (DRWRP). These contracts are being financed under the Department’s Water Services Investment Programme 2010-2012.

These contracts, which are elements of a coordinated approach to arrest water leakage in the Dublin region, involve rehabilitation works in the Grafton Street, All Hallows, Church Street and Grand Canal Street areas of the city and in Glenageary and Sallynoggin. Work is being carried out in a number of tranches and the outcome should be improvement in the quality and reliability of the water supply to the public, supporting commercial and industrial activity so crucial to economic recovery.

Mains rehabilitation work is a key priority under the Department’s Water Services Investment Programme 2010-2012. Minister Hogan’s approval of the funding for this contract reflects the need to deliver to consumers a drinking water supply that is reliable and fully compliant with drinking water standards and the priority being given to water conservation and to addressing unsustainable levels of unaccounted for water in the distribution system.

The Minister’s approval clears the way for work to commence. He will be asking Dublin City Council to get construction underway as quickly as possible.

Kieran Binchy has become the new Councillor for the South-East Inner City. The seat was formerly held by Catherine Noone prior to her election to the Seanad last April. Eoghan congratulates Kieran on his new position and looks foward to working with him on behalf of the people of Dublin South-East.

Ronan Kenny is a recent graduate of the UCD School of Architecture and a local resident. For his final thesis project, he undertook an urban study of Donnybrook and made a proposal for a new primary school and community hall in the village centre. Located on an unoccupied corner site opposite Kiely’s, the building would provide a focal point for the community and accommodate local events, continuing education and public meetings. The primary school classrooms would be placed along the crescent with a relationship to the existing terraced housing. The carpark would become a playspace and urban square with a connection to the historic cemetery. It is a hypothetical study carried out for the purposes of a university exam but it poses an interesting solution to some of the issues facing the continual development of Donnybrook centre.
